You might have heard about unspeakable accounts of some children and young people being sexually abducted and abused by sex offenders. In some cases, abducted children were even murdered. Utah is one of those states that are not free from offenders. An average utah sex offender is a person who lives among ordinary people such as you and me. The fact that many offenders live freely among people causes parents to be concerned about the safety of their children. The questions they ask often are “Are my children safe?” or “What can be done to increase the safety of my children?” The truth is that if an offender moves to a neighborhood, people living in that neighborhood might not know about it for a long time. Police officers rarely announce the offender’s presence. You will probably never receive a letter informing you of the offender’s presence in your area. If you want to know whether sex offenders live in your area, you must learn about it yourself. Nobody will do this job for you. Megan’s Law does not force police officers to let everybody know about offenders. It only authorizes the information about the offender to be released to the public so that everybody can know about it.
