What Does Your Internet Speed Really Mean?

One of the biggest selling points of most Internet service providers is speed, but Internet speed is a somewhat misleading and confusing concept. Usually, we equate speed with download times or page loads; those of us who are older remember the torture of early dial-up service. In order to help you understand what a service provider means when they talk about speed, and how that relates to you and your requirements, we’ve got a little explaining to do.

What’s in a Number?

When a sales associate brags about their service providing you with Xmbps of Internet speed, what they’re really talking about is how much data is sent to you within a specified time period, not how fast your router is. For example, if a provider says that they can offer you 5mbps, that means that a file that’s 5 megabytes in size will take one second to be delivered to your computer. You can receive five 1m files in that same space of time.

In other words, there is no difference in access speed from one provider to the next, or from one package to the next. The difference is in the amount of information you can receive within that time period. The real difference is in perception, not in actual performance.

What Affects Internet Speed?

How much information you receive to your computer within the specified time frame depends on your bandwidth; the more bandwidth you have, the more information you’ll receive at one time. So, when an Internet provider is selling you a package based on a speed of 25mbps versus 5mbps, what they’re really selling you is greater efficiency, or the ability to receive larger amount of information per second.

True Internet speed is determined by a factor called latency, which is the lag time for data to get from point A to point B. Latency, in combination with bandwidth, is what really tells how fast your service is. Where bandwidth is the size of the pipeline your data travels to get to you, latency is the amount of time it takes that data to make the trip down your fiber optic cable. The goal is to have lower latency, but high bandwidth.

There are three factors that affect the latency of an Internet connection:

1. How congested your network is.

2. The distance from the data point of origination to the destination.

3. What type of connection you have.

Three Tips for Personalizing Your Office

On some days, it feels like you spend more time in your office than you do at home. Whether you have a large office suite or a smaller space, it’s important to work in a space that is comfortable and inspiring. However, many professionals don’t take the time to create a personalized space.
You don’t have to be a professional designer or spend a fortune to create an attractive office. Instead, incorporate these ideas to design an office that is professional and personalized.

Start Small
When you look at your empty office, deciding how to fill all of the wall space might seem intimidating. Because of this, it’s easy to just leave everything the way it and not make any improvements.
Instead of giving up because you don’t have every aspect of your office perfectly designed, remember that it’s OK to start small. Even just adding a new coat of paint or a splash of color to your walls can make a huge difference.
If you’re not sure where to begin, start by deciding what bothers you the most about your office. Do you need a new desk chair because your current one is uncomfortable? Should the furniture be re-arranged? Do you need to take advantage of the natural light?
Making a small change that solves one of your problems will keep you motivated throughout the design process.

Remember the Office Setting
Unless you work in a highly creative or casual industry, it’s vital to remember that you office needs to remain timeless and professional. You might dream of adding a neon orange couch and colorful throw pillows, but that doesn’t mean it fits in well with the design of the rest of your office building.
In most cases, it’s best to err on the side of conservatism when you are re-designing your office. However, your space doesn’t have to be old and boring! Add small pops of color or modern accents to make a difference while remaining professional.

Add Personal Touches
Nothing makes your office feel more like home than personal touches. When you are surrounded by items and pictures that you love, you’ll feel more comfortable and inspired in your office space.
Filling your frames with updated pictures is a good start, but you can make a dramatic difference by including a few special focal pieces. Order large prints on metal to decorate your walls, or create a collage of your favorite places to display on your desk.

Check Spelling in Microsoft Word

The spelling feature in Microsoft Word is very useful to many bloggers. Since we are required to post our posts without grammatical and spelling errors, it is good to do some spell checking before you submit your post. In my version of Word I usually do not have to check spelling manually. Word does it for me and corrects me immediately if I write something in a wrong way, or if I write a word that is not recognized. If you have an older version of Microsoft Word, you might need to activate an option to check your grammar and spelling. You can do it by either going to Tools in the upper menu and then selecting Spelling and Grammar, or simply by pressing F7 on your keyboard. Of course, spell checking is not perfect and you have to spot some mistakes by yourself; however, it should not be a problem if you are a careful reader of your posts. Recently, I noticed that the WordPress platform allows bloggers for spell checking while they are writing their posts. From what I remember, this useful feature was not available in the past. Before this feature became available, many bloggers had to write their posts in Word document and then copy it to WordPress, and then publish it. I am very happy that a feature like this exists.

Creating Icons From Images

Windows icons are icons that are displayed on your desktop to represent different file types. You can use the default icons without any problems, but you can also create an icon from your favorite pictures. As a matter of fact, you can do it in many formats including 1616, 3232, 4848, and 6464. It can be quite fun and here is all you have to do:

  • Visit the website of ImagIcon (deviouscodeworks.co.uk/imagicon) to download and install the software.
  • Configure the settings of ImagIcon to your likings. By default it is an icon of 3232.
  • Open the program and drag the picture into the colored area. The icon will automatically be created.

Additionally, you can also use custom icons for your website to display the icon of your website in browsers. The software that I mentioned is free, but it does a great job. I do not believe that just because it is free it is in some way worse than paid software. The icons you create can be used for many purposes, but since the Internet is so popular, perhaps the most useful way you can utilize them is to set them as a default icon for your website. This software also features alpha transparency of icons, so as you see, it allows for a lot of customization.

Favorite Software

What is your favorite software? Is there any software you like to use? There are many people that enjoy using office suits as it allows them to perform many tasks. First of all, office suits usually feature a text editor, spreadsheet, and a presentation program. This can come in handy in offices, but it is also useful in home. Making complicated calculations is a lot easier in a spreadsheet, than using a regular calculator. Another very useful program is the browser, as browsers allow Internet users to browse the Web. Browsers are definitely one of my favorite programs.

How to deal with Malware Websites

I would like to share with you how I deal with malware websites. Basically, I use a free Firefox add-on called NoScript. NoScript is often called the king of scripts and it is a plugin for Firefox, which enables you to block JavaScript, Java, Flash and other executable contents in order to ensure the safety of browsing the web. Firefox with NoScript installed is often considered to be the most safe way to browse the internet. I can verify this myself, as I use this plugin personally. This is what are some of the new features from NoScript:

New blocked objects menu to temporarily allow any blocked plugin content instance on the page.
 Enhanced blocked content placeholders
Prevention of Java exploits based on malformed class names.
Enhanced bookmark and location bar management. I think that those features will be quite useful and will make this plugin even more desirable.

What to Look for in a Commercial Real Estate Broker

Whether searching for a small office for your upstart business or looking for a larger space for your growing business, you know that working with a real estate broker is your best option. A broker essentially brokers a deal between a buyer and a seller to ensure that both parties are happy. When searching for Chicago office space, there are a few simple things you should look for in a broker.

Listens to You

You want someone who will not only listen to you but only show you options that meets your needs. If the broker continually shows you office spaces that are outside of your budget or have too little or too much space, it’s time to move on and work with someone new.

Offers Multiple Choices

The best brokers are those who show you multiple choices. They might take you on tours of dozens of properties and show you multiple neighborhoods across the city to get a feel for what you want and need. Good brokers will also listen to your comments about each property and use your feedback to find better properties,

No Hidden Fees

Another thing to look for in a commercial broker is someone who want charge you hidden fees. Many brokers only accept payment once you sign a lease or agree to buy, and some only charge the sellers or landlords fees and not the buyers and renters. A broker who listens to you, doesn’t charge hidden fees and offers multiple choices is sure to find you the best office space.

Blogging Platforms

There is a lot of discussion what blogging platforms should a new blogger choose. I think that starting a blog on a free domain is a good idea for those new to blogging. There are a lot of free platforms available, the most widely known is probably Blogger and WordPress. Blogger has been around from the late nineties, and at some point has been purchased by Google. Having a blog on Blogger is very easy and does not require knowledge of programming such as html. You simply create your account, choose a template, and basically you are ready to go. No fees, no contracts, no wondering which web hosting provider to choose. Everything is very easy, which is a good thing for someone who is just considering to start blogging. You can start blogging as soon as you want, modify your template, and do many other things. The only downside is the fact that once your blog becomes quite popular you may want to move your blog to a paid domain. That is because once you will be regarded as an experienced blogger, you will probably will appreciate the freedom your own domain would provide. However, most blogs get abandoned within the first few months. That is why you do not have to pay for something that you may abandon at some point anyway.

Benefits of a Banking Witness

If you have a case that deals with finances and banking, then expert witness testimony might mean the difference of losing and winning. There are some people who need to here from an expert in order to make a decision on how banks operate and how funds are used. Some witnesses are used when the case deals with forged checks, payment systems, illegal wire transfers and credit card issues.

An expert witness can often be used for the prosecution or the defense. However, the witness is typically used for the prosecution as there needs to be evidence brought against the defendant. Witnesses can assist before the trial to help determine the best method of approach in getting the most information revealed in court. One of the reasons that an expert witness might be used is to create a sound background for the bank. The witness often testifies to the professional standard of care held by the banking system. It is the goal of the witness to create a bond with the jury. Without this bond created, there could be doubt about the actions of the bank if it involves a situation of money lending. The witness will ordinarily know about banking laws and how to present them in court.
