WordPress Errors

It seems like a good amount of bloggers are experiencing the WordPress mm_handled error, which triggers when you want to write a new post. What happens is that the custom fields section shows mm_handled over and over again. There are hundreds of mm_handled fields to fill out and for some people this prevents creating new posts completely. On the other hand, for others it extremely slows down posting. It is hard to say why this happens, but so far there are at least two things you can do:

Use Firefox, as at least you can create posts, but unfortunately posting is slowed down. While this is not really a solution to the problem, it will allow you to publish a important post without taking more drastic steps.
You can reinstall WordPress. This should fix the problem, as it worked for many people. On the down side, this will take you some time and dont forget to backup your database or any template changes. I cannot offer any easier solution, but if you think that you have a better idea please let me know by commenting.

I know that those who experience this problem might be feeling really lazy when it comes to posting, and that is why this error should be fixed as soon as possible.

How to Behave on Message Boards

We all visit message boards from time to time. Some of us do it more often than others. Message boards are also commonly known as forums. If you want to become an active user on a forum of your choice, you will have to remember about a few things. First of all, remember to choose a forum you are interested in. If you choose a forum you do not like, you are less likely to keep posting there and you will eventually stop doing it at all. Secondly, make sure that you read threads on which you wish to comment. If you fail to do it and you write something off-topic, you risk being flamed or made fun of. It is important to treat others with respect. Resorting to negative criticism might be the last thing you will want to do. If you want to add something to the discussion, be positive.

Which Firewall to Choose

Having a reliable firewall is necessary if you plan to spend a lot of time on the Internet. There are basically two types of firewalls: hardware firewalls and software firewalls. Router often works as a hardware firewall, and its role is to block potential attacks on your PC. However, most people associate the term firewall with a software firewall. Good examples of reliable software firewalls are Zone Alarm and Comodo Firewall. They are a very effective protection that will hide all the open ports you might have. Open ports are a vulnerability, and they open a door for potential attacks. A typical Internet user might not even know what an open port is, and that is why it is important that each Internet user has a firewall installed on his PC. You can easily install most firewalls from an USB drive. If you really want to have the best possible firewall protection, I recommend that you use both a hardware and software firewall at the same time. A hacker will have a very hard time trying to bypass such security, and he will most likely not succeed. We need to realize that we are not helpless when it comes to dealing with hackers, and there are effective ways to protect our computers. The first step is to use reliable firewalls.

Some Ideas for Writing Good Posts

There is a new blog being created in the blogosphere every few seconds and there are millions of them already existing. Some blogs attract more readers than others and unfortunately some blogs cease to exist. If you are a blogger, then it is very important that you know how to write high quality posts. It is also important to write about something that will be useful to your readers. If your English is good and if you stick to a few simple rules by promoting your blog in a right way, then your readers will keep coming again to read more of your well-written posts. Here is what you can do to still improve the quality of your articles:

-Do not make your posts too long or too short. Too long posts will make your readers tired and make them give up on reading your content. Too short posts will not make them stay long enough on your site.
-Write good openings containing no more than a few sentences. Use the element of surprise, be intriguing to catch the attention of your readers. Your opening matters a lot. Usually, after reading the first few sentences your readers make up their mind if they want to finish reading the article or simply leave.

Non-Copyrighted Images

Using non-copyrighted images has two main advantages. First of all, you do not need to pay for them, and secondly you do not risk copyright infringement. Besides that there are many high quality images that you can use. In my opinion, the best source of non-copyrighted images is Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons), so I am only going to discuss this website in my post. On the side note, take into account that many images found in Google images are indeed copyrighted. But let us get back to Flickr. The images that I recommend to use are using the creative commons license, especially the Attribution License. This means that you are free to use them for commercial and non-commercial use, and additionally you are allowed to modify the images. You are only required to credit the author of the image. Just follow those steps to get yourself started:

1. Visit Flickr creative commons page.
2. Browse the photos in the Attribution License section.
3. Use search option to find some images with the theme you are looking for.
4. Click on ‘View Most Interesting’ instead of ‘Most Relevant’ as this will show you some really high quality images.
5. Click on ‘Show Thumbnails’ to have many images displayed and this way save a lot of your time.
6. You are done! Simply upload the photo to your blog/website and credit the author by linking to his Flickr profile underneath the image. You may want to do it like I did it below:

Advantages of Choosing a Paid Hosting Service for Businesses

If you decided to start a website for your company, then at some point you will have to choose between paid hosting and free hosting. While there are advantages of both types of services, generally speaking, it is a better choice for businesses to choose a paid hosting service. Here are some reasons why it is not such a good idea to decide on using a free hosting service:

-You will probably end up with a long domain name if you choose a free hosting service. That is because your website will most certainly be hosted on a subdomain. If you decide to start a blog, then you will send up with website.blogspot.com or website.wordpress.com, instead of website.com. There are many disadvantages of long domain names and one of them is that it will be a lot harder for your visitors to actually remember your sites URL.

-Your website might look less professional. Many free hosting services will force you to display ads on your website. Sometimes these ads will be in the form of pop-ups, which not only does not look professional, but might be quite annoying for a typical visitors.

-Free hosting services usually are not able to guarantee ~100% uptime. This means that your site might be offline longer that it would be if you have chosen to do business with a reliable paid hosting company.

-In case you need any help, you will not be able to contact anyone to assist you. Free hosting services do not have enough capital to afford reliable customer service.

Improving Online Social Life

Some time ago I discussed ways to improve your online social life. Here are some more ideas on how to further enrich it:

Link abundantly to other bloggers. This can really pay off especially when you do not expect it. People like checking who is writing about them and might mention this fact in one of their posts. I noticed that many popular bloggers do that.
Join and be active in such communities like MyBlogLog. While trying to find how such communities like MyBlogLog can enrich the social life of many bloggers, I found some interesting articles from which I learned a lot. I myself have enjoyed participating in MyBlogLog and a lot of good things came out of it for my other blog. What I like the most about it is the widget that so many bloggers put on their site that displays the icons of other bloggers visiting their site. Basically, it displays the icons of bloggers that are also part of MyBlogLog community. To get most out of your membership in MyBlogLog, you need to actively participate in the community.

To sum up, I can say that blogging can be a very rewarding activity. It is up to the blogger how his social life looks like. There are many ways to enrich it, and make it even better.

Cell Phones

I am sure that almost every reader of this blog either has a mobile phone, or had one at some point of his life. It is not easy to decide which cell phone to buy if you look at the variety of features they offer. In this post, I am not going to discuss the cost of mobile phones or various calling plans they offer. I am going to focus on what features they have. Knowing what features you want your cell phone to have will make your choice a lot easier.

Every mobile phone these days has a function that allows sending and receiving SMS messages. Some of them allow MMS to be sent, record your voice, make a video, a picture, or even can connect to the Internet. The more features a phone has, the more expensive it will be. It is definitely up to you to decide what features you need and for which features you are willing to pay. For example, if you travel a lot, you will enjoy a cell phone thanks to which you will be able to connect to the Internet. On the other hand, if you are a stay-at-home mom, you will probably just need a simple mobile phone to stay in touch with your family members.

Cooperation in Computer Games

Those who are interested in online computer games, including online roleplaying games, know that Warhammer Online was released September last year. Along with other titles that were published such as Age of Conan, last year was quite a good year for MMORPG enthusiasts.

Generally speaking, I think that what is really fun for people is to compete with others, but also cooperate at the same time. Another element that is important is the ability to measure your results. When it comes to other activities besides computer games, it seems that sports match this description. When you play football, you compete with others, but on the other hand you also cooperate with your team. There is also a clear way to measure your score. The clear way to measure the score makes the game interesting, because it adds even more excitement and competition between teams. The reason why I am talking about sports is because Warhammer is built on the same principles, and that you are going to get a lot of excitement from the game while making friends, but also competing with others. Instead of sport teams you have Realms, but the way it works is very similar. Warhammer Online was released September last year, and it already sold one million copies.

Games and Laughter

Is playing games often associated with laughter? Measuring how often people laugh while playing games would be an interesting study to conduct. There are many games that are filled with humor, but it seems that the majority of games are action oriented. Actually, most people when they think of games, they might think of games filled with violence. However, it does not mean all games are like this. For example, Sam&Max and Jack Keane are the examples of games that are fun to play and are filled with humor. Even the recent bestseller, namely Grand Theft Auto IV, contains many jokes and parodies of cultural symbols, even though the game generally is focused on action. Let us hope that there will be more games in the future that will make us laugh.
